GASTONIA, N.C. (AP) — Authorities have released few details about a shootout officers had with a gunman they say killed his neighbor and wounded a woman.
Gastonia police say the gunman, Jeffrey Clyde Wilkes, was killed by police and two officers were wounded.
Authorities say Wilkes shot and killed his neighbor, retired Gaston County Police officer Charles Dean Thompson. They say Wilkes also shot and wounded a woman who lives with him.
Police say Wilkes was on a street corner with a pistol and rifle and fired on officers Saturday night. Gaston County Assistant Police Chief Joseph Ramey says Wilkes was killed when several officers fired back.
The officers' injuries aren't life-threatening. Their names or races have not been released. It's not clear what race Wilkes was.
Police refused to release more details Monday.
