Fire departments contain blaze after burn ban ignored in York County, SC

Multiple fire departments worked to contain a growing wildfire in York County after someone attempted a controlled burn, ignoring a state-wide burn ban, officials said.

A representative from the Sharon Fire Department says someone started the fire in an attempt to clear land on Locust Hill Road. They say the fire itself took up 50 acres.

Crews started battling the fire Saturday and say they were able to fully contain it on Sunday. Firefighters are continuing to monitor the area as the fire is still smoldering, according to Sharon Fire.

South Carolina Forestry will handle who will be charged in this incident. That information has not yet been released.

Officials say a firefighter working on the blaze had to be sent to the hospital for smoke inhalation, but has been released. They are expected to be okay.
