Fire forces families from their homes in east Charlotte

Two families have been displaced from their homes after a fire Monday morning in east Charlotte.

The fire was reported about 7:15 a.m. at an apartment in the 500 block of Alpha Street.

Heavy smoke could be seen coming from the roof of the structure. Charlotte Fire said they were able to control the blaze within 11 minutes.

No injuries were reported.

The apartment suffered heavy damage to the roof, but is not expected to be a total loss, fire officials said.

The fire did displace two families from their homes.

The Red Cross has been requested to assist the families.
