GREENSBORO, N.C. (AP) — The longest serving Republican U.S. House member in North Carolina has died.
The nephew of Howard Coble says the former congressman died late Tuesday night at a Greensboro hospital at age 84. Ray Coble Jr. said Wednesday his uncle died after a long hospitalization following several health problems, including skin cancer.
Howard Coble served 30 years on Capitol Hill, choosing not to seek re-election in 2014 due to health issues.
Coble had a long political and military career, including nearly 30 years in the Coast Guard. He was an assistant federal prosecutor, state revenue secretary under Gov. Jim Holshouser and state House member before his initial 1984 congressional victory.
Funeral arrangements had not been determined early Wednesday.
