CHARLOTTE, NC (FOX 46 WJZY) - A community remembered an army sergeant and philanthropist Friday afternoon in Statesville.
The parking lots were packed at Western Avenue Baptist Church where friends family and the community came together to remember Army Sgt. Dale Beatty.
Former Army Sgt. Dale Beatty was laid to rest Friday afternoon. He died unexpectedly Monday at 39 from a blood clot in his lungs.
Numerous attended his viewing and funeral in Statesville to honor not just a veteran but a philanthropist.
Beatty was a double amputee after an explosion involving a Humvee while he was deployed with the Army in Iraq.
He co-founded Purple Heart Homes in 2008 with a friend and fellow veteran. The nonprofit provides services to combat disabled veterans with housing needs.
Beatty leaves behind his wife and kids.
