Gaston Co. man convicted of statutory rape found

A convicted rapist who disappeared from a Gaston County courtroom is back in custody.

Gary Simmons was caught Saturday hiding in his girlfriend's attic in Belmont.

The 42-year-old went missing two weeks ago right as a jury started deliberating his fate. The judge issued two bench warrants against him.

He was found guilty of two counts of first degree statutory rape of a 14-year-old girl.

Simmon's girlfriend, Robin Lackey is charged with harboring a fugitive.
