Gaston County landscaping business helps pups stay warm during winter

A local landscaping business is getting results for outdoor dogs this winter-- giving them a warm, safe and dry place to stay.

A.J.'s Landscaping has teamed up with Gaston County Animal Care and Control to give away free dog houses to people who need them.

"I'm an animal lover," said Melissa Lawing, the mastermind behind the project.

It's a labor of love that the family-owned business is working on. Each year, they give away free straw to pet owners and this year-- they're taking their adoration for dogs to a whole new level.

"It's all about the animals," Lawing said. "Nothing but the animals."

"My mom saw a need in the community," said McKenzie Osborne. "There were a lot of dogs on chains and no dog houses-- so she decided to partner with people to give them away."

"I want them all to have a warm, safe and dry space everyday of their life," Lawing said.

Each dog house is made by hand.

So far, the business has given away 18 dog houses and is continuing to create more.

"There's no describing how it makes me feel," said Lawing. "I don't want the recognition or to be noticed for it -- I just want the pets to have a safe place."
