Gaston County man arrested in 1993 cold case homicide

After 23 years an arrest has been made in a Shelby cold case murder, according to the State Bureau of Investigation.

On April 26, 1993, the body of Judith McMurry was found deceased and slightly burned in the Penastar Mobile Homes Sales Office located at 1606 E. Dixon Blvd in Shelby, North Carolina.

SBI said they assisted the Cleveland County Sheriff’s office with the investigation and developed information regarding a suspect description.

In 2014, SBI and the Cleveland County Sheriff’s office continued to follow up on all information to include exhuming the body of Judith McMurry for further processing.

On Wednesday, September 28, 2016, SBI Agents and Detectives from the Cleveland County were able to arrest Chris Gordon Brooks, 56, of Gaston County, charging Brooks with First Degree Murder for the death of Judith McMurry.

Brooks was also charged with one count of Robbery with a Dangerous Weapon and one count of Burning of Certain Buildings. Brooks was placed in the Cleveland County Jail without bond.

To protect the integrity of the case for trial, the Cleveland County Sheriff’s Office nor the SBI said they will be making any further comments about this case.
