A half naked woman running on Florence Regional Airport property around 11:30 a.m. Sunday shut down the runway for about two hours, according to Major Mike Nunn with the Florence County Sheriff's Office.

The woman was spotted running across an inactive runway and into a wooded lot near the edge of the property, deputies said.

"We were informed by the witness/caller that a female, which was unclothed, gained access to Airport property and was last seen traveling south on airport property within the fenced area," Florence Regional Airport said in a written statement.

The sheriff's office was called to assist, along with K-9 units. A K-9 located the half naked woman lying down in a ditch primarily used for drainage, north of Runway 27, Major Nunn said.

The woman was taken into custody and then transported to an area hospital for evaluation.

"Within this time, American Airlines flight #4961 was scheduled to land at FLO but was diverted by the FAA tower back to CLT. The safety of our passengers is our number one priority and we take every measure to comply with FAA rules and regulations that are in place for their safety," Florence Regional Airport said Monday in a released statement.
