Harding High School argument leads to shooting, arrest

Police say an argument that took place at a west Charlotte high school led to a shooting. A man associated with the victim was also arrested at the scene for unrelated charges.

Police say around 9:45 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 4, an officer was on patrol when he say a Honda Accord traveling slowly on Ashley Rd. with a shattered back window.

The officer got out of his cruiser to investigate, and the driver started firing shots into the air. The officer called for backup, and once other police arrived on scene, they found 21-year-old Gervaris Culp inside of the car with apparent gunshot wounds.

While on scene, officers also found a stolen vehicle nearby with a firearm inside. Nazir Lucky, 19, was arrested on scene for an unrelated warrant for possession of a stolen vehicle.

CMPD detectives say an incident occurred at Harding High School which led up to the shooting. A family member of a 15-year-old that was involved also told FOX 46 Charlotte that the shooting started as a fight between two groups at the Harding High and West Charlotte basketball game.

Witnesses said that Culp was possibly shot in the back during the ordeal. They also report hearing about 25 to 30 gunshots before officers arrived on scene.

This is an active and ongoing investigation. Detectives ask that that anyone who may have been at Harding High School, or may be familiar with the incident that happened before the shooting, share that information with the police.
