'Heartbeat Bill' would make most abortions after 6 weeks illegal; SC House committee approves

It's known as the 'Heartbeat Bill', and South Carolina’s House judiciary committee approved the proposal on Wednesday.

After more than five hours of deliberation, lawmakers voted 15 to seven in support of that bill. If it becomes law, almost all abortions after the sixth week of pregnancy would become illegal. There would be exceptions for cases of rape and incest.

The period of time is before many women know they are pregnant. Right now, abortions are prohibited after 20 weeks in South Carolina.

Democratic leaders say even if this bill passes the full South Carolina House, they are confident they can stop it from becoming law.
