CHARLOTTE, NC (FOX 46 WJZY) - The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department is still working to identify the driver of a vehicle that struck a Citizens On Patrol volunteer Monday evening in south Charlotte, before fleeing the scene.
The volunteer has been identified as William Schweppe. CMPD said he remains hospitalized and is expected to have surgery later in the day on Tuesday.
Around 5 p.m. Monday, a car hit a power pole on Park Rd. at Hillside Avenue. The power pole had to be replaced, shutting down Park Rd. between Hillside and Townes.
The victim, a Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department Citizens On Patrol (COPS) volunteer, responded to the accident to assist officers with directing traffic.
Police said Schweppe was driving a marked vehicle with emergency lights, which were on at the time he was directing traffic. He was wearing a reflective vest and using a flashlight to direct the traffic with. As he was directing traffic a white four-door sedan hit him and fled the scene.
Schweppe suffered serious, but non-life threatening injuries and was transported to CMC-Main.
