Human skeletal remains removed from Mooresville site for testing

Human skeletal remains found near I-77 and Lake Norman in Mooresville were removed from the site Wednesday in an ongoing investigation to identify them.

The remains were located on a Bridgewater Lane property off Highway 21 near the Food Lion shopping center and exit 33 Tuesday afternoon.

Iredell County Sheriff Darren Campbell says the bones had been at the site for a significant amount of time and had been scattered by animals.

According to Campbell, the remains will be examined at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center Wednesday to determine age, race and sex. He says preliminary suspicions about the nature of the remains were formed Wednesday but will have to be confirmed before he can share additional information.

A drone was among the tools investigators used to document the scene.
