Huntersville Doctor arrested for child pornography

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department arrested Dr. David Michael Shope for child porn charges after an eight month long investigation.

Shopes was arrested on Friday, October 2 with the assistance of Huntersville Police.

In February, CMPD Cyber Crimes Unit began an investigation into the exchange of illegal pornographic material on the internet.

Shope faces two felony counts of Second Degree Exploitation of a Minor and two more felony counts of Third Degree Exploitation of a Minor, according to CMPD.

He was released Wednesday, on a $120,000 bond.

While not employed by Novant Health, Dr. David Shope does have hospital privileges at two of our hospitals. Novant Health takes this matter seriously and has worked with medical staff leadership to take all appropriate steps to protect our patients. 

Dr. Shope's attorney made the following statement:

Dr. Shope has been devoted to the service of others throughout his career in the medical profession. There is no allegation of any wrongdoing with respect to his position as a physician. We look forward to addressing the allegations in court.
