Husband injured, wife killed in north Charlotte shooting

A woman was killed and her husband injured following a shooting Wednesday night in north Charlotte, according to Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police. 

The woman has been identified as 71-year-old Santa Rodena Acevedo. 

Police responded to the scene in the 1900 block of Newland Road around 7:30 p.m Wednesday, April 3 following reports of shots fired.

Upon arrival, officers found the woman and a man with gunshot wounds. The woman was pronounced dead at the scene. Her husband was taken to the hospital for treatment.

"We are still looking for a motive,” a CMPD official said. 

Police are searching for one suspect. A CMPD K-9 was seen tracking through the north Charlotte neighborhood while a police chopper flew overhead. At this time, the suspect's relationship with the victims is not known. "We have no idea at this time. It's wide open."

Police are continuing to search for answers to the city's 34th homicide of the year. 

"It's going to take everybody. Everybody. The media. The community. The politicians. It's going to take everybody."

Detectives have canvassed the scene to determine if there are any witnesses. The investigation is active and ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
