HUNTERSVILLE, N.C. (FOX 46 CHARLOTTE) - The northbound lanes of Interstate 77 in Huntersville had to be closed after an overhead sign was damaged in an accident overnight.
The accident happened on I-77 at Catawba Avenue, Exit 28. Two people were taken to the hospital with injuries. Officials say one of the signs above the interstate was damaged and knocked off its base.
I-77 northbound were closed at Sam Furr Road, Exit 25 for several hours as crews work to remove the sign over safety concerns. They have since reopened.
Motorists were advised to use Catawba Avenue to get back on I-77 northbound.
"Heavy congestion is expected and drivers are urged to avoid this area, if possible, for the next several hours," NCDOT released in a statement.
All lanes of I-77 south are open.
