Infant shot in the ankle, CMPD says

An infant is recovering after the child was shot in southwest Charlotte Monday afternoon, according to Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police.

Officers were called to Carolinas Medical Center about 3:26 p.m. in reference to an infant that was shot in the ankle.

According to CMPD, the mother was walking to her apartment with the infant on Romare Bearden Drive when an unknown suspect fired a gun from an unknown direction. 

The bullet struck and went through the infant’s ankle and grazed the mother. Both the infant and mother sustained non-life threatening injuries. 

Officers and Crime Scene Search canvassed the area to determine the exact location this occurred and if there are any additional witnesses to this incident. 

At this time police said it does not appear that the victims were apparent targets. No suspect(s) are in custody. This remains an ongoing, active investigation
