IREDELL COUNTY, N.C. (FOX 46 CHARLOTTE) - An inmate is facing additional charges after injuring two detention officers at the Iredell County Detention Center over the weekend, authorities said.
The incident happened about 8 p.m. Sunday. According to the Iredell County Sheriff's Office, an inmate, Khaleel Mangum began causing a disturbance within the Holding Cell he was in. Detention officers went to speak to Mangum in an attempt to determine the problem. Authorities said officers directed Mangum to step outside, but he would not comply and a struggle ensued.
During the altercation two detention officers were injured. Deputies said one suffered a fractured bone in his leg, the other officer sustained a thumb injury.
Mangum, 22, was charged with two counts of felony assault on a person employed at a state or local detention facility. He was given a $125,000 secured bond.
Mangum was confined in the detention center for violating a domestic violence protective order. He has previously been arrested for assault by strangulation, and resisting public officer.
