Inmates under 18 allowed free calls at Mecklenburg County Jail, Sheriff says

Sheriff Gary McFadden says inmates at the Mecklenburg County jail who are 18 and under will now be able to make calls for free.

McFadden says that most of MCSO’s population are in pre-trial status, and the high cost of placingcalls can make it difficult for them to communicate with attorneys, family and loved ones.

He believes the financial costs for telephone calls undermine family units and community ties and that limiting communication for inmates can result in worse outcomes.

McFadden and the MCSO staff will continue to review current policies to ensure the safety and well-being of those in MCSO’s custody.
