Johnson C. Smith University Campus Police, in conjunction with Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department, is conducting an investigation into a shooting incident that occurred on campus.

It happened at approximately 5:45 p.m. Wednesday, March 23, 2016 in the 100 block of Beatties Ford Road.

One person was taken to CMC with minor injuries.

The assailant, a non-student, was apprehended and the gun confiscated. JCSU is a gun-free campus with posted signs to that effect.

Authorities said the shooting occurred during the week of Spring Break in a suite of a residence hall and was swiftly contained, with no threat to the campus.

It appears as though two students violated JCSU policies regarding visitation and weapons, which are designed to protect students. Authorities said the students have been temporarily suspended pending further investigation.
