Two Iredell County Sheriff's deputies were involved in a crash on Wednesday, and one of them has died, according to the Sheriff.

Around 1:40 p.m., Deputy Justin Betts told Iredell County Communications that he had been involved in a car accident on Taylorsville Hwy near Lippard Farm Rd.

The Sheriff's Office says Deputy Betts was on duty, and had slowed down to make a left turn into a parking lot.

The second deputy, Corporal Bill Wood, was off duty, riding a motorcycle. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Betts and Wood were driving in opposite directions, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.

Highway Patrol said excessive speed was not a factor in this crash but there was not enough time for the motorcyclist to slow down to avoid hitting the SUV that turned in front of him.

When asked if charges could be coming to Betts, Highway Patrol said that's something that will be discussed with the District Attorney's Office as part of the investigation.

Corporal Wood had been employed with Iredell County Emergency Communications since 1993 and had transferred over to the Sheriff’s Office in 2007.

North Carolina State Highway Patrol is investigating. Deputy Betts will be placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
