An Iredell County man has been charged after he was accused of trying to run his wife over.

Deputies were called to the 100 block of Ginger Lane near Mooersville in reference to a domestic dispute on Friday, March 1.

It was reported that Gary Lee Paynter, 49, was actively trying to run his wife and bystanders over in the area. Paynter left the scene before deputies arrived in a silver Ford Mustang.

A deputy passed a car matching the description on Shinnville Road and tried to make a stop. After turning on the blue lights and siren, the Mustang continued driving away. The deputy decided not to pursue based on traffic and weather.

The Mustang was later seen turning onto Oates Road off of Charlotte Highway and another deputy in the area got to it in a cul-de-sac on Rainford Court. He was able to apprehend Paynter and take him into custody without incident.

A search of Paynter’s Mustang revealed a .45 caliber handgun, a quantity of cocaine, drug paraphernalia and an open container of alcohol.

Paynter is being held at the Iredell County Detention Center. He's been charged with several counts, including felony fleeing to elude arrest, driving while license revoked, assault with a deadly weapon and assault by pointing a gun.

The magistrate issued a no bond on the domestic violence related crimes, and a $12,500 secured bond on the other charges.
