A kidnapping suspect was taken into custody following a SWAT situation in Gastonia, according to police.

Gaston County police went to a home on Old Spencer Mountain Road just before 6 p.m. on Monday, April 22 to serve a warrant. When officers arrived on scene, the suspect, Christopher Hibberts took off running.

Officers followed him to the home where he barricaded himself, and would not follow any commands. He remained inside for hours, until officers were able to enter through back door using mechanical breaching.

A K-9 officer was sent into the home and found Hibberts, who had buried himself under several pieces of debris.

Hibberts was taken into custody around 10:30 p.m. without further incident.

Police say they've had several interactions with Hibberts in the past, and is well known among local law enforcement.

He is accused of kidnapping a female acquintance earlier in the week. Police say he broke into her home with a gun and wouldn't allow her to call the police. They did not provide details on how the incident ended, but say she's fine.

Some residents had to be evacuated earlier in the day, but they have been allowed back into their homes at this time.

No other information has been released at this time.
