Kings Mountain man killed in rollover wreck on I-85, police say

A Kings Mountain man was killed in a rollover wreck Wednesday night along Interstate-85, police said. 

The crash happened at 8 p.m. Wednesday, April 24 along I-85 northbound. 

Gastonia Police said the vehicle was traveling north and attempted to merge from the middle lane into the left lane. A witness said that during the merge the driver attempted to jerk back to the right and lost control of the vehicle, ran off the right-hand side of the road and overturned. 

The witness told police the car was not speeding, nor was it being driven erratically. 

The passenger was totally ejected from the car and the driver was partially ejected. The driver, Scotty Atkins, 49, was pronounced dead on arrival at CaroMont Regional Medical Center. 

The passenger, Holly Bridges, 48, of Kings Mountain, was listed in critical condition but was alert later in the day, police said. This crash remains under investigation.
