The Gastonia Police Department has arrested a man accused of kidnapping a woman and attempting to make her withdraw money from her bank account.

Reginald Aaron Ballard, 42, has been charged with first degree kidnapping, felonious restraint, attempted robbery with a dangerous weapon, assault by pointing a gun and communicating threats.

On Sept. 25, Ballard's girlfriend, Melissa Lefler, told deputies that Ballard held her against her will and forced her to drive to a local bank in an attempt to withdraw $5,000.

She was able to trick Ballard into getting out of the car, and blew her horn several times while in a parking lot near the bank, sending Ballard running. Law enforcement has been looking for him since that time.

On the morning of Tuesday, Oct. 16, Ballard was walking down Franklin Blvd. in Gastonia and was taken into custody by Gastonia PD after an off-duty Lincoln County Sheriff's deputy spotted him.

He was turned over to the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office and has been placed in the Harven A. Crouse Detention Center under no bond. His first court appearance is scheduled for Oct. 17.
