LINCOLNTON, N.C. (FOX 46 CHARLOTTE) - Lincoln County deputies are continuing to investigate an accidental shooting that took place on Wednesday.
The Sheriff's Office recieved a call on March 20 about a shooting incident at the Lake Norman Quarry. Workers say it happened around 7:50 p.m.
The victim, Jerry Lee Burnette, 47, was operating a crane at the quarry when he was struck in the leg by a piece of shrapnel. He was able to climb down from the crane and deputies took to the main gate of the facility where he recieved treatment from Lincoln County EMS. Burnette was then taken to Atrium Health in Charlotte.
Witnesses say the shrapnel glanced off of a piece of equiptment and hit Burnette. The caller told Lincoln County Communications that it sounded like multiple weapons were being fired.
After a check of the area, deputies found a location in the 6800 block of Glover Lane where several people had been shooting semi-automatic weapons. They were interviewed and weapons were seized.
Deputies say they will bring the incident to the attention of the Lincoln County District Attorney's Office to determine if charges will be filed in the case.
