A town cemetery in Maiden has more than $50,000 worth of damage, and Maiden police say a man driving under the influence is responsible. There's significant damage to at least 20 headstones and the Veteran's Memorial Flagpole at the Maiden Town Cemetery.

Monday night two people told police they saw a man driving a pickup truck driving through the cemetery. The witnesses called police, who stopped James Walker, 47, shortly after it happened. Walker is charged with driving while impaired, hit and run, possession of open container, disturb grave marker, and injury to real property.

Maiden police said they wouldn't have found Walker as quickly as they did if they hadn't had help from witnesses.

The town's manager says the cemetery will be completely restored. It has not been decided who will foot the bill - the driver, insurance, or other town resources.
