CHARLOTTE, NC (FOX 46 WJZY) - New details have emerged about a man who was shot and killed by a Charlotte Mecklenburg police officer in West Charlotte after running toward officers with a knife.
A man took a Facebook live video at Lake Ridge Apartments on Timberbrook Dr. Friday afternoon, when police were called to check on 27-year old Charlie Shoupe, who was suicidal according to a 911 caller.
In the video, Shoupe is seen pointing a knife at first responders. He paces for a bit, then brutally cuts an area of his own arm with the knife.
It's difficult to see in the video, but moments later police say Shoupe charged at officer Daniel Flynn with the knife.
Flynn, shoots Shoupe nine times. He was transported to the hospital by Medic where he later died.
"This is a criminal investigation and we're going a parallel internal investigation to make sure no policies were violated,” CMPD Chief Kerr Putney said during a press conference
FOX 46 Charlotte spoke to people throughout this neighborhood and none of them say they knew Shoupe or what led to his behavior.
"They shot him. That's what happened. It was basically nothing but him out here saying shoot me, shoot me,” one witness who wished to remain anonymous said.
All this witness knows is that it went down very fast.
