Authorities have made an arrest in a 1992 cold case involving a sexual assualt and robbery.

On Friday 45-year-old Antwan Kirkland was arrested and charged with rape, kidnap, and robbery.

On May 30, 1992, the two victims were leaving the Charlotte area and were asking for directions from strangers.

The two men entered their vehicle and gave directions to an area close to Cheviot Road where the men are accused of stealing jewelry at gun point and sexually assaulting the victims, according to CMPD officials.

The victims were treated at Carolinas Medical Center and sex assault tests were given with no credible results at the time. Additional testing was done in 2018 and DNA evidence confirmed Kirkland as the suspect.

The CMPD Cold Case Unit interviewed Kirkland on Wednesday at which point he was taken into custody.

Anyone with more information on this case is encouraged to contact Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
