Man breaks into Lake Wylie church in socks and underwear, police say

A break in at a Lake Wylie church turned bizarre as a man was found in the bathroom with nothing on but underwear and socks.

Deputies say the suspect didn’t steal anything. All he got away with was a free ride to the York County Jail.

“It was a crazy night,” said Pastor Aaron Morgan

Around 1 a.m. Saturday, York County deputies were called to Redeeming Grace PCA on Charlotte Highway because someone tripped the security system.

Deputies found a broken planter, smashed glass and a pile of wet clothes sitting outside the church. Inside they found a 37-year-old man in the bathroom, wearing nothing but socks and underwear.

The incident was being watched by a pastor who has access to the church’s video security system. That pastor also called a fellow pastor.
“When he told me what happened I had him repeat it because I had just woken up. I told him, now I just woke up tell me everything again,” said Pastor Morgan.

Deputies took the suspect into custody and collected the video as evidence.

The man told deputies he didn’t mean to break to the glass, but never offered an explanation as to why his clothes were wet and not on.

Luckily for the suspect, it appears he chose one of the few places that offers forgiveness.

“In terms of our relationship with the man we would love an opportunity to show him the forgiveness of Jesus Christ. We would love that opportunity,” said Pastor Morgan.

The man was charged with burglary and malicious injury to a place of worship. In South Carolina that could carry a sentence of 6 months to 10 years in prison if found guilty.
