A man is facing charges after allegedly beating his girlfriend’s 18-month-old baby, according to deputies with the Alexander County Sheriff’s Office.

Alexander County 911 received a call Friday from a residence about an 18-month-old that had fallen off of a couch.

When EMS arrived to the residence on NC Hwy 16 South, they felt the injuries did not match the call and reported to the ACSO.

The homeowner told detectives that the incident occurred at a residence on Will Wilson Lane that was owned by Justin Carver.  The homeowner said Carver had brought the child to the residence, which is a relative of Carver, and Carver called 911.

Carver is not the biological father of the child, but the mother’s boyfriend, according to authorities.

The baby was taken by EMS to Catawba Valley Medical Center in Hickory and later flown to Brenner’s Children Hospital in Winston Salem.

After speaking with the child’s mother and Carver, detectives found the child was unable to wake and noted bruising. The injuries appeared to be life threatening, according to the sheriff’s office.

The child was put on life support

Detectives talked to the medical staff and determined that the injuries appeared to be child abuse. Investigators found that Carver was the only caretaker of the child at the time of the incident.

Carver was charged and arrested with Felony Child Abuse and placed under a $500,000 secured bond.

His first court appearance is scheduled for September 26, 2016.
