Man charged with murder in shooting death of 25-year-old in NW Charlotte

A man has been charged with murder in connection to the shooting death of another man Thursday night in northwest Charlotte, police said. 

Matthew Duke Gibbons, 25, was shot at 8:29 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 1 in the 300 block of Rhyne Station Road. CMPD officers responded to the scene for an assault with a deadly weapon call. 

Upon arrival, officers found Gibbons with an apparent gunshot wound in the front yard of a home. He was pronounced deceased on scene by Medic.

Willie Devon James Jr., 28, has been charged with the murder of Gibbons, police said. James was located overnight and is charged with murder, robbery with a dangerous weapon, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. 

James is being held at the Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office.
