A Newton man is facing a second-degree murder charge in the traffic death of a Catawba County pastor.

Zachariah Arthur Carl, 31, made a first court appearance on Wednesday. He was charged with second-degree murder, driving while imparied, failure to stop for a steady red light, possession of an open container and driving with license revoked by NC Highway Patrol troopers.

Michael Howard Vanderburg, 43, was killed in the crash on Tuesday on NC Highway 70 near Conover.

Carl was given a probable cause hearing date for December 16.

Judge Barkley increased Carl's bond to a $1 million cash bond along with numerous other conditions if Carl is released.

The investigation showed Carl ran a red light and hit the minivan, killing Vanderburg. Vanderburg was traveling with his kids. They were taken to the hospital and have since been released.

Vanderburg was a pastor at Abundant Life Church of God.

The highway patrol continue to investigate the fatality.
