Man facing charges in wreck that killed pedestrian in Gaston County

A Gaston County man is charged with second degree murder after he fled from police and caused a deadly crash.

Joshua Soule appeared in court on Monday. He’s accused of hitting two pedestrians during a high speed chase with deputies, killing one of them.

Deputies say they were pursuing Soule because he was seen driving erratically around 7:30 p.m. on Sunday. They say he was driving over the speed limit when he hit two pedestrians near Rankin Road.

However, neighbors in the community say here say that's not what happened. Witnesses say Soule hit the first man, but didn't hit the second man, Shawn Smith. They say deputies hit Smith, who is recovering tonight in the hospital.

The State Bureau of Investigations is looking into the crash.

Soule was taken into custody and charged with DWI and fleeing to elude. He hasn't been charged with hitting the two pedestrians, and remains at the Gaston County Jail.
