Man hit, killed while sleeping on railroad tracks in Rock Hill identified

UPDATE: 1/14/17 (6 p.m.): The York County Coroner's Office has released the identify of the man found dead on railroad tracks in Rock Hill last week. He is 57-year-old Donnie Smith. Rock Hill Police are investigating. 


UPDATE: 1/13/17 (9:14 a.m.): Investigators with Rock Hill Police discovered that the man who was found dead on the railroad tracks on Wednesday night had been sleeping on the track bed in between the rails when he was hit by a passing train at about 5:00 a.m.

The 57-year-old man was trespassing on Norfolk Southern Rail Line at the time he was hit, according to police.

Rock Hill Police are investigating a possible train vs. pedestrian accident after a man was found laying on the tracks Wednesday night, according to police.

Officers responded to the 1200 Block of E. White Street at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday in regards to the collision.

Officers believe a man was trespassing on the railroad tracks of Norfolk Souther rail lines and was possibly hit by a train at 4:45 a.m. the same morning.

There were no witnesses to the incident and the man was found laying on the track around 6:00 p.m. by a passerby, according to police.

The incident remains under investigation.
