Man struck, killed by vehicle in southeast Charlotte

One person is dead after they were hit by a vehicle Monday night in southeast Charlotte, according to Charlotte-Mecklenburg police. 

The incident happened in the 4800 block of Monroe Road. 

Police said Pedro Tovar III was riding a bicycle in the inbound lanes of Monroe Road. Tovar was not wearing a helmet and was wearing dark clothing, according to police.

A 2006 Mercedes-Benz CL65, driven by Henry Powell Satterwhite, was heading inbound in the left lane of Monroe Road. Tovar was hit by the front left corner of the Mercedes and he was thrown out to the pavement. 

Satterwhite immediately stopped his car and tried to help Tovar who had come to rest in the road. Medic responded to the scene and pronounced Tovar dead.

Speed and alcohol use are not suspected as contributing factors in this crash. The bicycle did not have any reflectors or light activated at the time, according to police.

The crash is under investigation by the Major Crash Investigation Unit of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department.  Any person who witnessed the crash or has information about the case is asked to call Detective Oberer at (704) 432-2169 or Crime Stoppers at (704) 334-1600.
