Man succumbs to gunshot wound, police charge suspected shooter with murder

Police have charged a suspect in the 2017 murder of a Charlotte man. 

Thomas Whitt, Jr., 23, has been charged with the September murder of Khristopher Andrew McDuffie, 22.

Around 10:45 p.m. on Sep. 27, 2017 CMPD officers responded to the 7200 block of E. Independence Blvd. for an assault with a deadly weapon where one male was reportedly shot.

Upon arrival the victim, McDuffie, was found and taken to Carolinas Medical Center with serious injuries. He succumbed to his injuries on March 2.

The suspect, later identified as Thomas Whitt, Jr., was arrested near the scene. An initial investigation revealed that Whitt and McDuffie knew each other and were involved in an argument prior to the shooting.

Whitt was charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury and possession of marijuana.

On March 12, Whitt was indicted on murder charges. Whitt, who was out on electronic monitoring for the original shooting incident was apprehended by officers without incident and transported to the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office.
