CHARLOTTE, NC (FOX 46 WJZY) - A SWAT situation came to a close in southeast Charlotte Thursday afternoon.
The standoff began after police found Todd O'Brien Houston, 30, at an apartment complex in south Charlotte 9:00 a.m. Officers were attempting to serve 32 felony arrests on Houston, but before they could apprehend him, he fled in a stolen car.
A helicopter unit followed Houston until he pulled into the 7700 block of Krefeld Glen Drive at McAlpine Ridge Apartment complex. He got out of the car and continued to run towards an apartment building.
After officers found Houston in a stairway with a gun, they set up a perimeter and SWAT was called in. Some residents in the immediate area were relocated as a precaution.
McAlpine Ridge Apartments sent a note out to their residents, letting them know that "CMPD is on the property looking for a suspected car thief that drove into the community and they suspect he is armed."
Several residents of the apartments have been forced out of their homes, and are being told it could be up to 12 hours before they're allowed back in.
Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools also announced that they would not be dropping students off at the apartment complex this afternoon, and instead will keep them at their schools where parents can pick them up, or wait for buses to make rounds around 5:30 p.m.
After some hours, Houston surrendered and was taken into custody just before 5:00 p.m. He was found in possession of a firearm with the serial number destroyed.
He was taken to police headquarters to be interviewed, and will later be transported to the Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office.
Houston has an extensive criminal record with at least 10 arrests noted in the Mecklenburg County Detention Center's records.
