CHESTERFIELD, SC (FOX 46 WJZY) - Video shows fire destroying several businesses along Main St., the heartbeat of town in Chesterfield.
"It's like a death. Like I said all my life, the drug stores been here since the early 60's, when I was a young fella and the store where the 'Pink Door' was I use to work there, that was Pusses Department store and I use to work there as a young kid,” said Philip Caulder Jr. whose mother owned a beauty salon in the area.
The fire chief says this was the largest fire they've battled in his 45 years with the department.
"It's devastating because people have their lives involved in the community and some of the folks had their lives involved in their business and it's just devastating to see that kind of loss,” Chief Michael White said.
The Pink Door clothing store was completely destroyed and so was Longs Pharmacy, a restaurant, a barber shop and the beauty salon were also damaged.
"The roof of the building fell into the 3rd floor and that floor fell into the main pharmacy area for at least half the building."
The pharmacy owner says it's a fixture in town and has been there for 100 years. Caulder Jr. grew up just next door.
"Going to the drug store has a lot of meaning to me. My mom was the 3rd or the 2nd owner of it, and raised her family out of the beauty shop and the woman that owned it before her raised her family out of the beauty shop."
The drug store owner, Ken Long, plans to open a temporary pharmacy on Main St. while he rebuilds, but some say it just won't be the same.
"Well it'll be good that's is still there but I guess it won't be quite the same,” said Caulder Jr. .
The fire chief says the fire doesn't appear suspicious however, it remains under investigation.
