Matthews residents live in fear as police search for sexual assault suspect

The Matthews Police Department is investigating a sexual assault that occurred on Tuesday morning at the Windsor Landing Apartments.

Officers responded to a 911 call at 6:18 a.m. Tuesday, August 23 about a sexual assault of a young woman.

Detectives are working active leads but told FOX 46 Charlotte they haven't identified a suspect at this time.

“Especially with a child or a young adult, that’s obviously a whole different level of concern,” Tim Aycock with the Matthew’s Police Department said. “And we are just trying to let everyone in that neighborhood and that complex know that we are doing everything we can to step up patrols.”

Police said it’s too early to know if the suspect is a resident of the apartment complex but urge everyone to pay attention to their neighbors.

“Know your neighbors,” Aycock said. “We you get out and build those relationships, and know the comings and goings of your neighbors. That way you know who is not supposed to be in that area.”

Bernard Webel is a resident at Windsor Landing Apartments and said he heard nothing about the incident or the missing suspect, but his son-in-law saw police cars by the tennis courts.

Webel said he's concerned about the safety of his family.

“You never know. Especially if they haven’t caught the guy. Nobody knows anything about this person," Webel said.

Webel said he told his wife and daughter not to walk around the apartment complex at night or early in the morning because the suspect is still out there.

“[His wife] is very nervous about it. She says we got to keep the door closed and locked all the time.”
