Mecklenburg County now accepting LIEAP applications

Mecklenburg County's Department of Social Services is now accepting Low Income Energy Assistance Program (LIEAP) applications.

LIEAP is a federally funded program that helps eligible applicants pay their heating bills with a one-time vendor payment.

Throughout December the program will give those with disabilities who receive services through the Division of Aging and Adult Services or households with residents who are 60 or older priority eligibility.
Applications for those households will be taken Dec. 1-31 or until funds are exhausted.

Applications for all other households are accepted from Jan. 1- March 31 of each year, or until funds are exhausted.

Starting on Dec. 1, a household that applies must meet the following criteria:

  • Have at least one U.S. citizen or qualified alien
  • Have income below 130 percent of the Federal Poverty Level (FPL)
  • Have reserves at or below $2,250
  • Be responsible for its heating bills

Applications can be completed at the Kuralt Center at 301 Billingsley Road or Chapin Hall, 3205 Freedom Drive.
