To help mark the beginning of World Autism Month, the Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office patrol vehicles flashed their blue lights Monday morning in uptown Charlotte.

The Sheriff's Office partnered with Autism Speaks Carolinas for the Light It Up Blue campaign Monday, April 2, for World Autism Awareness Day.

The campaign aims to bring awareness and to show support for the children, adults and families affected by autism spectrum disorder.

MCSO patrol vehicles were parked outside the Mecklenburg County Courthouse, in the traffic circle, around 7 a.m. Monday with their blue lights flashing. Iconic landmarks, businesses, schools and homes in more than 150 countries were lit up in blue at dusk.

Light It Up Blue marks the beginning of World Autism Month, a global movement to increase understanding and acceptance of people with autism.
