An eight-year-old child has gone missing in Cleveland County, according to the Sheriff's Department.

Tristen Wayne Woodrum was last seen at 60001 Maple Valley Dr. in Shelby. He was reported missing around 7:15 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 8. Authorities say he had been gone for about 40 minutes at that time.

Deputies and a K9 began to search the immediate area, but say it did not prove fruitful as family had already been searching the area and the dog could not distiguish between the scents.

Emergency management has been flying a drone over the area, thermal imaging is being used and at least 25 volunteers from the fire department are searching the scene. Authorities also went door-to-door asking neighbors for any information.

Trisen is described as being between four feet, eight inches and five feet tall with blue eyes, dirty blonde hair and freckles. Family tells FOX 46 he's "terrified" of the dark, and the area surrounding the Shelby home is heavily wooded with no street lights around.

Anyone with information should call the Cleveland County Sheriff's Department at 704-484-4888.

Editor's note: This story has been updated to reflect that Tristen Woodrum is 8 years old, not 9.
