A fire broke out at the Carolina Waterfowl Rescue in Indian Trail Sunday night, killing more than 30 birds and injuring dozens of others.

The fire happened around 6:30 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 19 at the non-profit's building adjacent to their barn. Volunteers noticed smoke coming from the building and called 911.

Rescue staffers said they have lost 35 birds and about 50 are being treated for burns and smoke inhalation.

The Union County Fire Marshall said the fire appears to have started in an electrical outlet, but their investigation remains open and active.
