Morning snow, ice prompt school delays and closings

Schools across North Carolina started late or canceled classes Monday as winter-like weather swept through the region.

The National Weather Service issued a Freeze Warning Monday morning, Oct. 30 as strong winds continue across the North Carolina mountains. Winds will continue to be strong across the mountains in the wake of a strong cold front.

The highest gusts can be expected across the ridge tops. Meanwhile, relaxing winds and clear skies will allow temperatures to dip to or below freezing across the Georgia and South Carolina mountains, as well as most of the North and South Carolina Piedmonts.

Avery County Schools are closed Monday due to snow and ice on the roadways. Watauga County Schools are also operating on a 2-hour delay.

Avery, Ashe and Watauga counties are all under a Wind Advisory.
