Mother charged with child abuse after 8-year-old son injured in lawn mower accident

A Lincoln County mother has been charged with felony child abuse following a lawn mower accident that injured her 8-year-old son, according to the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office.

On Monday, April 1, Ashley Stacey Holt, 27, was arrested on one felony count of negligent child abuse with serious bodily injury. She was released after posting a $2,500 secured bond.

“They are great people,” said family friend Makayla Randolph. “It was a freak accident unfortunately.”
Deputies said the incident happened on Tuesday, March 19. Holt was mowing the lawn at her home on Clark’s Creek Road while holding a small child on her lap. Her 8-year-old son was also riding on the deck of the zero turn lawn mower.

Holt stopped the lawn mower but the blades failed to disengage. Deputies said the young boy fell from the deck and was struck by the blades on his left leg and both hands. He was airlifted to Atrium Health-Charlotte by Med Center Air where he underwent surgery for his injuries.

“They are going through a lot but they are going to get through it,” said Randolph. “Braiden is being tough. He’s being really strong and really brave.”

Down the street from the home, Handy Corner store is collecting donations for medical bills and selling t-shirts.

“It says hashtag Braiden strong.”

Randolph says the Holts are regulars at the store: “We are really hoping this family can get through this really tough time. They are in our prayers and our thoughts and we just want them to know we are here to support them.”

The child remains in the hospital undergoing further treatment.

Holt will have a first appearance in Lincoln County District Court on Tuesday, April 2.
