IRON STATION, N.C. (FOX 46 CHARLOTTE) - A mother who hasn't heard from her son since June says she called police Wednesday morning worried that skeletal remains found in Iredell County could be her son.
Carol Mejia, who lives in Iron Station, says scares like a body being found are just some of fears she faces every day.
"It's always there-- that my son is missing and I don't know where he is and I don't know if he is safe,” said Mejia.
June 29, 2018 is the last time anyone saw or heard from 25-year-old Sam Davis. He was last seen at the Davis Lake Subdivision in North Charlotte. Police searched for days on the ground and in the air, but nothing turned up.
"We don't have any other leads. It’s just baffling. That's why we feel somebody must know what happened," said Mejia.
If that person is out there, they haven't come forward.
In the more than six months that have passed since Davis disappeared summer has turned to winter, the holidays have come and gone, a new year is now upon us and now Sam's mom is preparing to celebrate her birthday this Saturday.
It will be the first birthday without her son.
"Leading up to my birthday I am trying to stay optimistic, but that just makes it difficult. All milestones are difficult. The holidays were just awful,” said Mejia.
Just like the holiday season, Mejia spent her birthday waiting by the phone.
"For a millisecond when I answer the phone I almost hear his voice and then it never is,” said Mejia.
With little clues a private investigator has been hired to help find Sam Davis. A detective from CMPD also continues to work around the clock. Sam's family even setup a GoFundMe to raise money for a reward.
"Not knowing is just absolutely torturous,” said Mejia.
