CHARLOTTE, N.C. (FOX 46 CHARLOTTE) - PHOENIX (FOX 10) -- Sometimes, people can really achieve more when they do it together.
Two family members are sharing how their struggles turned into triumph, thanks to their close bond.
"We do everything together. She was my teacher in high school," said Xavier Garcia, who dreams of working in audio production. His mom is his biggest supporter.
"She was at my prom, goes to my DJ gigs," said Xavier.
At the same time, Xavier's parents also encouraged him to have a backup plan, and apply to become a police officer. Xavier did. but then came the hurdle, as he wasn't passing the entrance exam, after trying several times.
"He was getting really discouraged," said Xavier's mother, Tracey Contreras. "'I'm quitting, I'm not doing it and I can't pass it'. He struggles with comprehension, for your own personal reasons, don't get defeated."
"I wanted to give up, but my parents wouldn't let me," said Xavier. "They kept pushing me and pushing me."
Then, something unexpected happened.
"She was like, if it makes you feel better, I'll take it with you," said Xavier. "I was like yeah, let's do it."
They studied, took the test together, and both passed. Now that they've passed the exam, the next step is going through several months of training at the police academy.
So, the big question now is whether Xavier's mom going to become a police officer as well.
"I'm going to go as far as I can," said Tracey. "If I can make it, I'm going to try."
If they do both pass the police academy, Xavier and his mother told us they would love to work together in the same police unit as well.
