Multiple students rushed to hospital after school bus rollover in Alexander County

More than a dozen students were rushed to the hospital after a school bus rollover crash in Alexander County Monday morning, according to North Carolina State Highway Patrol.

The accident happened about 7:36 a.m. on Icard Ridge Road near NC 127, in the area of Alexander Middle School. According to the initial investigation, a Toyota passenger car was traveling south on Icard Ridge Road, crossed the centerline, and collided with the school bus. The bus continued off the roadway and overturned.

According to Alexander County Schools, Bus #159 was heading toward West Alexander Middle School. Officials said 13 of the 19 students on board, as well as the driver, were taken to an area hospital. Twelve of the injured students received minor injuries. One student was listed in in critical condition. The extent of their injuries are not known at this time.

The remaining children were taken to school.

The driver of the other vehicle, 56-year-old Kimberly Ann Austin, of Taylorsville, was transported to Frye Regional Medical Center. Troopers have charged her with driving while impaired and driving left of center, according to NCSHP.
