Officials in Davidson are providing details on a Davidson police sergeant currently being treated for a mysterious illness at Duke University Medical Center.

Sgt. Cindy Smith, a 15-year veteran of the department, has been hospitalized since Thanksgiving.

Initially thought to have the flu, her condition worsened to a what appears to be a severe neurological issue.  Doctors believe it could possibly be a form of vasculitis, which attacks the nervous system, but have yet to determine the type.

She had been treated at Forsyth Medical Center, but was recently transferred to Duke University Medical Center for treatment and recovery from her current condition.

The Police Benevolent Association has set up an account to help Smith and her family out with lingering expenses during her hospital stay and recovery at State Employees Credit Union.

Those who wish to donate are asked to make check or cash deposits payable to "Cindy Mills Smith" with a reference "Special Account for Sgt. Smith".

Checks can also be mailed to: State Employees’ Credit Union, P.O. Box 2294, Cornelius, NC 28031
